There are moments in life when we know what the next step probably should be… but we still hesitate.

Not because we don’t believe God exists.
Not because we don’t want to obey Him.
But because the future feels uncertain, the waters look deep, and we would much rather wait until everything feels safe and clear.

The truth is, most of us prefer the harbour.

Harbours are comfortable. Predictable. Controlled. They protect us from storms and uncertainty. But years ago, I heard Bill Hybels say something that has stayed with me ever since:

“Boats were never designed to sit safely in the harbour.”

That picture says so much about the Christian life.

A boat may look safest tied securely to the dock, but that’s not why it was built. It was built to move. To carry people. To cross deep water. To fulfill its purpose out on the open sea.

And in many ways, the same is true for us.

As followers of Jesus, parents, pastors, leaders, and everyday people trying to make a difference, we were never meant to spend our entire lives standing safely on the shoreline analyzing conditions forever. At some point, faith requires movement.

I’m reminded of the Israelites standing at the edge of the Red Sea. Behind them was Pharaoh’s army. In front of them was impossible water. God had told them to move forward, but the path had not appeared yet.

There’s an old Jewish legend—not found in Scripture, but powerful in its imagery—that says while everyone else stood frozen in fear, one man stepped into the water first. He walked deeper and deeper until finally the sea parted.

Whether the story happened exactly that way or not, the message behind it rings true:

Sometimes the miracle comes after we take the first step.

Too often we wait for certainty before obedience.
We wait for guarantees before movement.
We wait for perfect conditions before action.

But Ecclesiastes 11:4 reminds us: “Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.”

There comes a moment when faith means getting our feet wet.
When leadership means stepping into deeper water.
When trusting God means leaving the harbour behind.

Not recklessly.
Not foolishly.
But courageously.

And honestly, that’s true not only in our personal lives… but also in ministry.

Joshua 1:9 says: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Maybe today God is asking you to stop waiting for every answer and simply trust Him with the next step.

Because many of the greatest things God does in our lives happen once we leave the harbour… and follow Him into deeper waters.
